Standard: Bei der Präsidentschaftswahl in Mali gehen Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, genannt IBK, und Soumaïla Cissé in die Stichwahl.
Holder: Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta war der klare Favorit des ersten Wahlgangs. In die Stichwahl zu müssen ist für ihn ein Rückschlag – denn jetzt ist er nicht mehr sicher zu gewinnen. Es könnte sich eine ganze Koalition gegen ihn bilden, angeführt von seinem Gegenspieler Soumaïla Cissé.
Standard: Was unterscheidet sie?
Holder: Cissé ist eher wirtschaftsliberal und macht sich für den ökonomischen Wiederaufbau stark. IBK verspricht die Wiederherstellung staatlicher Autorität; er gibt sich als paternalistischer Chef, der die Malier aus 18 bewegten Monaten mit Militärputsch, Tuareg-Rebellion und Krieg gegen die Jihadisten führen will.

But Libya was primarily a problem for the Arab world, and thus their mess to clean up.How is it, then, that the US and NATO countries are carrying both the military burden, with no more than token Arab involvement, as well as the military cost? Obama suggested the Arab League requested such military action. But Egypt alone has adequate military capability to deal with Libya in a walk (or is its army only trained to head east?), while the Persian Gulf countries could fund the operation. So why are we tasked with pulling their Libyan chestnuts out of the fire if not so they can later blame someone else if it all goes badly? And yes, if the Libyan operation is a trial run for „Responsibility to Protect“, we definitely should be concerned that the Arab League, EU or UN will be requesting similar action against Israel, especially after Israel rejects international recognition of a Palestinian state.
When the schoolyard bully finlaly gets his just dessert he has all those little whining kids on the sidelines cheering. Well, those whining little kids in this case are the Gulf states and Saudi Arabia. Gaddafi has always been their biggest danger, they are the ones who egged on the West to clobber their bully. We all know Gaddafi is crazy, he is crazy enough to come out of this with his whole skin and back in the saddle and the little whiners will be the first to commiserate with him and the treatment meted out to him by the wicked West. And then the fun will start. A sovreign govrnment will be asking what happened to all the funds it had deposited with those Western thieves.
